May we ask for confirmation regarding the (alleged) statement that Ms. Winfrey gave to NBC News that Miss Philippines, based on her answer to the final question, should have won or deserved to win the 2011 Miss Universe title ‘hands down’ ? Thank you.

So , Ms. Winfrey did not make such statement alright. Now, does it really matter if she did?. I know I sounded like it does matter on my previous blog “Woman of Color.. Reigns!” .

Well then , erase ! erase ! erase !……..erase!

Like I have been emphasizing on my previous posts and  on my Facebook status and tweets during the competition and even hours after it that the judges’ decision on who will be crowned is the one that matters. What are they there for ? How we see the candidates on the screen might be different from the people who were invited to occupy the best seats in the house like no other than the panel of distinguished judges.

MISS ANGOLA is deserving to be crowned. To the sour-grapping haters- Get Over It! . To the supporters of Ms. Philippines Shamcey Supsup (myself included) let’s continue to celebrate. Making a spot on the finalist , 3rd place to be precise , is not so bad at all…. I repeat, NOT BAD AT ALL! It’s an honor and a great opportunity for all the candidates including to those who even didn’t make it to the top16. Let’s just all be happy and pleasured for this year a WOMAN of COLOR…… REIGNS!

Woman of Color…..reigns!

Ms. Angola Leila Lopes (full name: Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes) crowned Miss Universe 2011 at Sao Paulo Brazil. Born on Feb.26,1986.  She is Angola’s first Miss Universe title holder.

On an interview , Miss Angola , now Miss Universe said that by winning the crown , she hopes  her victory will allow her to assist her native Angola to further escape its history of war and impoverishment and said too that she plans to focus on combatting HIV around the globe. Ms. Universe believe that she will be able to do more than what she already did .

During the Q and A portion on the pageant she answered Judge Miss Lea Salonga’s question about having to change a thing in her  by saying that she is happy and contented of what she already has (according to the English translation of the interpreter). During one of the post coronation interviews, when asked about racism in view of the fact that she is one among the very few who was crowned Miss Universe, Leila Lopes stated that “every racist needs to seek help. It’s not normal in the 21st century to think in that way” . With this kind of attitude and personality, one can tell she will be successful in  fulfilling the Miss Universe 2011 duties.

Celebrating the success of a woman in color reigns with a diamond crown , How would the world react to a woman of color icon Oprah Winfrey said via NBC News:

“I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”

Well, like most of us Oprah Winfrey was not among the panel of judges whose duties for the night is to pick among the 89 beautiful ladies as to who will take home the crown , and according to the judges… “ the winner is… Miss Angola!”

I would like to emphasize that , I am satisfied with the results. She is 2011 Miss Universe and no one can top that. She will be a good model and inspiration to everyone. Once again , Congratulations Miss Angola and Good luck to your quest as Miss Universe 2011.

Proud to be PINAY

Shamcey Supsup , my country Philippines’ delegate to the 2011 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant . 25 year-old from General Santos City , Southern Mindanao Philippines. Graduated Magna-Cum-Laude for BS Architecture at the University of the Philippines. Topnotcher  in the Licensure Examination for Architects taken last July of 2010.

First time to join a pageant and made herself crowned Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2011 which brought her feet to Sao Paulo Brazil to compete with the 88 other most beautiful ladies in the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant. She top the poll voting , She made it to the top 16 , top 10 , top 5 and finally ranked 3rd place.

The timeline  on my twitter has been flooded for hours now of Filipinos that are proud and disappointed. Proud for Ms. Shamcey Supsup to rank third runner-up among 89 contestants. Proud for her to be the only contender at the top 5 who did not hire an interpreter. Proud for being the only English-speaking amongst the 5 finalist. Proud for fluently expressing her religious beliefs not only for herself but in behalf on the Filipino values as well. Proud for representing the nation with wit , beauty , personality and honor . For the Filipinos , She is Miss Universe for the year 2011.

So where does disappointment fit in the picture? Maybe because , Filipinos smart as we all are  (Ha!Ha!) , the idea of Miss Universe being the representative of women all around the world , perhaps one should be able to speak  and understand the international language. Agree? . Winning the crown not only entitles you to have all the time to learn speaking English but isn’t it a plus already if one is fluent when being crowned?.

Anyway , pageant is over and I congratulate Miss Angola Leila Lopes who took home the crown. I love the idea for a women of color to reign!   Miss Angola Leila Lopes with Ms. Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrette during the crown turn-over.

The world respects the judges’ decision  and Philippines is celebrating with her and her country. Good luck and enjoy the moment Miss Universe 2011!
